Scenario 6, Scene 4. Ambush


Scene 4

Is the bear still prowling around? Yes, but it has lost interest in the characters and settled to sleep.

Dart clambers down from the airship and looks around the clearing. The large bear that was stalking them earlier seems to have lost interest in the hunt and is curled up under a nearby tree. Dart makes sure to give him a wide birth and looks for tracks on the ground (using Nature to search for tracks, rolling 0+1=1. Success at a cost). He finds them easily enough – humanoid footprints, broken vegetation, leading to…
1)      A trap
2)      An ambush
Ambush it is!! A warforged squad have been watching them this whole time…

I am going to set the warforged up as mooks

A heavily built warforged steps onto the path ahead, and holds out a hand in a pacifying gesture. “Brother, there is no need to fight. We have been willing slaves and soldiers for the meatbags for far too long. Join us and we can build a civilisation of our own.”
“A civilisation without honour? A civilisation that would turn its backs on our very makers? This ship was not yours to take. It is property of the crown of Breland.”
Does he spot the approaching scouts (he rolls notice for 1+3=4 against -2+4=2!! Success! The GM will spend a fate point to reroll for 0+4=4, and a tie or success at a cost).
Something catches Darts attention in the bushes and rolls reflexively to the side as half a dozen more warforged emerge around him and unleash a hail of arrows.
(The warforged attack for 0+4=4, against Darts athletics of 0+1=1, scoring 4-1=3 shifts and 3+w2-a0=5 stress. Dart tags Forged in the fires of war for +2, and marks his 3 stress box)
A decade of training and experience in the field saves Darts life as he rolls aside just in time to avoid being peppered with arrows and comes up in a defensive crouch, bow drawn.
(Dart rolls attack for -1+2=1, +2 for weapons of the hunter and bow specialist=3, against the scouts -2+0=-2, for a total of 5+w3=8 stress. Taking out four warforged) As he rises, Darts bow is already nocked and he unleashes an arrow which is met by a metallic thunk and a screech of disbelief. A brief exchange of bowfire follows and three more warforged fall screeching from their defensive positions.
“Go.” The big warforged confronting  him yells over its shoulder as it strides forwards, bringing a massive spear into a ready position.
Dart drops his bow and readies his own spear as the hulking brute bears down on him. (Sergeant attacks for 0+4=4 against Darts Fight of -1+2=1, scoring 4-1=3 shifts and 3+w2=5 stress. Dart spends another fate point to tag forged in the fires of war, reducing it to 3 stress and marking his 4th stress box). The brute swings overhead and then twirls his spear at the last moment, to jab under Darts defensive parry. Again Dart is saved by his years of experience, and he twists aside, bringing his own spear low to deflect the stab.
Under cover of their leaders duel with Dart, the remaining Warforged retreat into the forest.

Round 2
Dart realises he is outmatched and breaks off from combat in an attempt to get away (creating an advantage using stealth for -2+3=1, success at a cost). He manouvers towards some heavy undergrowth and thrusts his spear hard into the face of his assailant. The brute ducks out of reach and snatches the spear from his grasp but the distraction is enough and Dart drops to his right, rolling deeper into the bush and crawling steadily away in a lateral movement.
The sergeant follows Dart into the bush, thrusting his spear left and right in an attempt to locate his quarrie and then simply stops still, watching and waiting alert for any disturbances in the forest around him (creating an advantage using nature for -1+3=2, and getting the boost ‘aware of my surroundings’)

Round 3
Dart moves carefuly, circling round to where he dropped his bow and nocking an arrow (creating an advantage with stealth for 2+3=5, succeeding with style and creating ‘I have you in my sights’ with two free invokes).
The sergeant (attempts to overcome his stealth, rolling at mediocre because he doesn’t have a relevant skill, but tagging ‘aware of my surroundings’ for the boost and getting 1+2=3. Dart rolls to defend using stealth for -1+3=2) turns slowly, taking note of the forest around him – the sound of the animals and birds, the sway of leaves in the wind. Something is out of place. There. He spots Dart just as the Warforged raises his bow and prepares to unleash an arrow…

Round 4
As the Sergeant turns towards him Dart lets his arrow fly (rolling 1+3=4, +2 for weapons of the hunter and bow specialist=6 +4 for I have you in my sights=10, against defence of 1+0=1. Scoring 10-1=9 shifts, dropped to 8 for rapid shooting makes 8+w2=10 stress, taking the sergeant out!!), taking him out with a single arrow through the eye.
