Scene 4
Is the bear
still prowling around? Yes, but it has lost interest in the characters and
settled to sleep.
Dart clambers
down from the airship and looks around the clearing. The large bear that was stalking
them earlier seems to have lost interest in the hunt and is curled up under a
nearby tree. Dart makes sure to give him a wide birth and looks for tracks on
the ground (using Nature to search for tracks, rolling 0+1=1. Success at a
cost). He finds them easily enough – humanoid footprints, broken vegetation,
leading to…

A trap
2)
An
ambush
Ambush it
is!! A warforged squad have been watching them this whole time…

A heavily
built warforged steps onto the path ahead, and holds out a hand in a pacifying
gesture. “Brother, there is no need to fight. We have been willing slaves and
soldiers for the meatbags for far too long. Join us and we can build a
civilisation of our own.”
“A
civilisation without honour? A civilisation that would turn its backs on our
very makers? This ship was not yours to take. It is property of the crown of
Breland.”
Does he spot
the approaching scouts (he rolls notice for 1+3=4 against -2+4=2!! Success! The
GM will spend a fate point to reroll for 0+4=4, and a tie or success at a
cost).
Something
catches Darts attention in the bushes and rolls reflexively to the side as half
a dozen more warforged emerge around him and unleash a hail of arrows.
(The
warforged attack for 0+4=4, against Darts athletics of 0+1=1, scoring 4-1=3
shifts and 3+w2-a0=5 stress. Dart tags Forged in the fires of war for +2, and
marks his 3 stress box)
A decade of
training and experience in the field saves Darts life as he rolls aside just in
time to avoid being peppered with arrows and comes up in a defensive crouch,
bow drawn.
(Dart rolls
attack for -1+2=1, +2 for weapons of the hunter and bow specialist=3, against
the scouts -2+0=-2, for a total of 5+w3=8 stress. Taking out four warforged) As
he rises, Darts bow is already nocked and he unleashes an arrow which is met by
a metallic thunk and a screech of disbelief. A brief exchange of bowfire
follows and three more warforged fall screeching from their defensive
positions.
“Go.” The big
warforged confronting him yells over its
shoulder as it strides forwards, bringing a massive spear into a ready
position.
Dart drops
his bow and readies his own spear as the hulking brute bears down on him.
(Sergeant attacks for 0+4=4 against Darts Fight of -1+2=1, scoring 4-1=3 shifts
and 3+w2=5 stress. Dart spends another fate point to tag forged in the fires of
war, reducing it to 3 stress and marking his 4th stress box). The
brute swings overhead and then twirls his spear at the last moment, to jab
under Darts defensive parry. Again Dart is saved by his years of experience,
and he twists aside, bringing his own spear low to deflect the stab.
Under cover
of their leaders duel with Dart, the remaining Warforged retreat into the
forest.
Round 2
Dart realises
he is outmatched and breaks off from combat in an attempt to get away (creating
an advantage using stealth for -2+3=1, success at a cost). He manouvers towards
some heavy undergrowth and thrusts his spear hard into the face of his
assailant. The brute ducks out of reach and snatches the spear from his grasp
but the distraction is enough and Dart drops to his right, rolling deeper into
the bush and crawling steadily away in a lateral movement.
The sergeant
follows Dart into the bush, thrusting his spear left and right in an attempt to
locate his quarrie and then simply stops still, watching and waiting alert for
any disturbances in the forest around him (creating an advantage using nature
for -1+3=2, and getting the boost ‘aware of my surroundings’)
Round 3
Dart moves
carefuly, circling round to where he dropped his bow and nocking an arrow
(creating an advantage with stealth for 2+3=5, succeeding with style and
creating ‘I have you in my sights’ with two free invokes).
The sergeant
(attempts to overcome his stealth, rolling at mediocre because he doesn’t have
a relevant skill, but tagging ‘aware of my surroundings’ for the boost and
getting 1+2=3. Dart rolls to defend using stealth for -1+3=2) turns slowly,
taking note of the forest around him – the sound of the animals and birds, the
sway of leaves in the wind. Something is out of place. There. He spots Dart
just as the Warforged raises his bow and prepares to unleash an arrow…
Round 4
As the
Sergeant turns towards him Dart lets his arrow fly (rolling 1+3=4, +2 for
weapons of the hunter and bow specialist=6 +4 for I have you in my sights=10,
against defence of 1+0=1. Scoring 10-1=9 shifts, dropped to 8 for rapid
shooting makes 8+w2=10 stress, taking the sergeant out!!), taking him out with
a single arrow through the eye.
