Scene 3
A combat
scene? I’m not sure about that. Jolenes earlier failure seems to have shortcut
the dungeon, so we will go straight into trying to escape.
Can Verden
and Jolene escape before the Vampire tortures them?
Actually,
Verden has probably already been tortured a bit, but hey, at least hes still
alive.
So Jolene
will start by trying to pick the lock (rolling Burglary for -1+2=1. Succeeding
at a major cost – what the hey, lets make it a combat after all).
“Don’t
worry.” Jolene says, eyes sparkling with mischief, “This is all part of the
plan.” She pulls a hairclip and works it into the lock, twisting it back and
forth until there is a click and the door swings ajar. “Ta Da!!” she exclaims
as she pulls it open triumphantly, quickly followed by a curse as she sees the
number of thugs standing guard outside.
So combat it
is.
Lets make it
6 minions each in two mobs:

Guard bell: Use ohysique to
summon more guards by blowing a whistle aginst fair (2) difficulty. Each shift
of success summons 1 extra guard.

Turn 1
As soon as
the door opens, the leitenant fumbles for an alarm whistle at his belt and
blows as hard as he can, letting out a piercing note (rolling physique for
2+4=4) and summoning another squad of guards from outside.
Jolene acts
fast, kicking over the table and smashing the oil lamp on the floor (create
advantage using athletics for 2+3=5, creating a wall of flame with 2 free invokes.
The guards
are split by the wall of flame Jolene has created, and Verden charges an
isolated group (rolling 1+3=4, +2 smite for a total 6 against -1+3=2, making
6-2=4-A1=3 stress, tagging wall of flame
twice for a total 7 stress ) and drops 7 men in flashes of silver fire.
The remaining
guards crowd forwards (attacking verden for -1+2=1 vs 0+3=3, and Jolene for
2+2=4 vs 1+2=3. Failing to hurt either (but creating a boost against Jolene)
Turn 2
The Liutenant
continues to whistle for reinfocements (scoring 0+4= 2 shifts, adding another 2
guards to the reinforcement group).
The constant
reinforcements are a problem, and Jolene rushes to bar the door to block any
more from arriving (creating an advantage using athletics for -1+3=2, opposed
by a mob of guards rolling physique for 0+2=2, and creating barred door.) she ducks and weaves past
the guards and throws the door shut, slamming a nearby block of wood in place
to keep it barred.
Verden makes
straight for the lieutenant (rolling fight for 0+3=3, +2 smite =5. Against
0+3=3, causing 2 stress), barrelling guards aside as the lieutenant backs away,
trying to keep a table between them.
The guards
attack (verden for 0+3=3 against -2+3=1, causing 3-1=2+w2-a3=1 stress. And
Jolene for 1+2=3 against -2+3=1, causing 3-1=2+w1-a1=2 stress.), battering both
heroes.
Turn 3
The
leuitenant continues to whistle for guards (rolling 1+4=5, for 3 more guards)
and they start battering loudly on the door Jolene has blocked.
Jolene
(attempts to create an advantage using athletics for 2+3=5 and success with
style. Creating blocked in with 2
free invokes on the lieutenant.) and weaves her way back through the guards to
block the leiutenants path and allow Verden to close on him.
Verden makes
use of Jolene’s block and reaches out for the lieutenant (rolling 1+3=4, +2
smite=6 and tagging both free invokes for a total 10 vs 0+3=3. Causing
10-3=7-a1=6 stress, taking him out), gripping him by the shirt and pulling him
close as silver fire washes over him.
(rather than
fight it out with the guards, I will concede as GM here – the guards will
retreat allowing the characters to consolidate, but they will rally outside
along with the Vampire).
Seeing their
commanding officer fall, the guards fall back through the doorway and into the
night outside. Jolene and Verden glance at each other – they out of the cellar,
but still trapped in the house, and they aren’t going to escape without a
fight.
