Scenario 4, Scene 1. A potential Saviour

Scenario 4

I was going to introduce another character here, but Jolene makes sense as a tie in, and it will get her acquainted with Verden.

So A vampire is feeding from people in the city That sounds like it would be a problem for the disgraced scion of house Gholander responsible for troubleshooting problems.

A vampire has been feeding on Gholander guests, and it falls to Jolene to put an end to it.

Questions;

Will Jolene track the Vampire down?
Can Jolene Free Verden from the vampire?
Will they defeat the vampire?

Pretty straight forwards, lets see what happens….

Scene 1

Will Jolene track the vampire down

“Your sure it’s a vampire?” Jolene asks incredulously.

“The symptoms fit. It seems that one of the refugees has been researching them at the chapel of the silver flame, and now our guests seem to be on the menu. Needless to say, that is not a state of affairs that can be allowed to continue.”

“I’ll take care of it.” Jolene has no idea how – guests at various house Gholander inns and safe houses have begun showing symptoms of vampiric victimhood, and of course it is her job to put a stop to it. Somehow.

First she needs to find a bit out about Vampires (rolling contacts to create an advantage for 2+2=4 and a free tag on vampiric lore), so she visits a scholar she has had dealings with before and pulls in a favour to gain access to a library at the chapel of the flame where she reads the same books Verden did only a few days before. Of course, she has the advantage of knowing what she is looking for.

Figuring that if their champion was involved then they are probably a good place to start, Jolene makes her way to the Refugee camp. If possible she wants to talk to Verden himself, but if not then that seems like as good a starting point as any.

Lets make this another challenge;

Notice – to spot signs of Enthralment amongst the refugees
Deceit – to get information about Verden or the Vampire without giving her intentions away
Stealth – to make her way to the lair without being seen

First she rolls notice (for -1+2=1, and has no clue that the refugees have been compromised)
Second she rolls Deceit (for -3+3=0, tagging master of disguise for a fate point and a reroll, getting 2+2=4)
Thirdly she rolls stealth (for 0+2=2, succeeding at a minor cost and arriving as darkness falls and the vampire is at the peak of its powers)

Jolene approaches the refugee camp as an agent of house Gholander and puts word out that she is looking for Verden with respect to debts he owes the house. To her surprise, many of the refugees simply claim ignorance and either say they don’t know who she is talking about (don’t know their own champion, really?) or say they have not seen him for several days. After a mornings talk however, it becomes clear that she is being steered away from a compound in the center of the camp, and a number of the refugees unconsciously glance towards it when Verden is mentioned. For one reason or another she is being stonewalled, and if they want her away from the compound then she can be sure that is exactly where she wants to be.

She leaves the camp and waits for dusk before pulling on a black leather suit complete with gloves, soft boots, and a brace of throwing knives, and heading back through the camp towards the compound. The evening camp is surprisingly quiet, with most of the refugees hidden safely behind doors and only the occasional militia patrol which she avoids by keeping to the lengthening shadows and ducking out of sight where needed. She is fairly sure she has managed to get in unnoticed, although she has to backtrack twice to avoid patrols and by the time she reaches the compound it is almost entirely dark, and only the lamps hanging from street posts and shining through windows are keeping the night at bay (oil lamps, because the refugees cannot afford to light their camp with magical ones).

Success.
