Fugees and Iron Scene 3

Scene 3

Can Verden defeat the minions sent to ambush him?

So after the last scene, Verden has been brought to the vampires attention and has spent the whole afternoon and well into the evening studying the chapel archives. As a result, the vampire has prepared an ambush to ensure he doesn’t see another morning.

The ambushers are mesmerised refugees – probably people verden knows.

1 x 3Hitters – sneak close and attack by surprise (Fight 2, Deceive 1, [])
2 x 3Thugs – seek to overwhelm him through numbers (Physique 2, fight 1 [][])
Weapon 2, armour 1.

(because he is the “champion of the dispossessed” it makes sense that he will not draw weapons against the refugees, gaining a fate point for the compel).

The goal of the thugs is to capture him (and bring him to the vampire to feed on)
Verden’s goal is to escape the ambush…

First the hitters will attempt to set up the ambush by creating an advantage using decive (rolling -2+1=-1 oposed by Verdens empathy roll of 1+2=3, which fails and tips verden off that they are about to attack.)

Round 1

As he emerges from the chapel, Verden is approached by a group of friends from the refugee camp. Three of them he knows well from the council are approaching him while he can see others hanging back in the shadows of nearby alleys. The men call out to him as they approach and he waves back, but something doesn’t seem quite right. Perhaps it is the emotionless tone of their voices, or the stiffness of their comeradery. Perhaps it is the unusual bulk of their robes concealing armour beneath, or the way their hands are hovering close to where a hidden sword hilt might be. Perhaps it is just paranoa drawn from his long hours reading about arcane magics and mind control spells. Whatever it is, he is ready for them.
The men wait until the last possible moment before drawing blades and lunging forwards to run Verden through, but he is already in motion (Verden rolls fight for 1+3=4, +2 for smite giving a total 6 against a defensive fight of 1+4=5. Verden tags infused with the living flame and champion of the dispossessed for another +4 and a score of 5 shifts minus a1=4 shifts. Taking out all 3 attackers.) As the first refugee lunges forwards Verden slips past his blade, moving behind him and trapping the mans outstretched arm with his own and gripping hold of the mans head in his other hand, supplying just enough force to control his momentum and swing him between Verden and the other two attackers.
As he takes hold of the man, Verden can feel the same parasitic wrongness that afflicted his father in law and the living flame within him surges in recognition. Silver flames rush from Verdens hands, exorcising the evil forces within the refugee and leaving his unconscious body to slump at Verdens feet.
Without missing a beat, Verden drops the unconscious man to one side and rushes his companions, slipping past their blades and thrusting open palms into both of their chests simultaneously. As he touches them, silver flame flashes from his hands and both drop as though their strings have been cut.
The moment verden springs into action and blades are drawn, half a dozen more refugees wielding an assortment of blades and clubs charge from the alleys. (first group rolls fight for 1+3=4 against Verdens defensive Fight of 3+3=6. Resulting in a failed attack. Second group rolls fight for 0+3=3 against Verdens fight of 2+3=5, scoring -2 shifts). Verden systematically deflects and dodges their blows, always moving to keep one attacker between himself and the others, and always staying on the edge of the pack, refusing to let them surround him.

Round 2
(Verden attacks with fight for 2+3=5 +2 for smite totalling 7 against a defense of 0+2=2. Giving 7-2-a2=3 shifts) Eventually Verden sees an opening and silver flame flares as he manages to close with one of the refugees. He nearly takes hold of another one, but is forced to duck back as a spiked club whistles past his head.
(Group 1, consisting only 2 refugees now, attacks with fight for 0+2=2 against verdens defence of 1+3=4. Group 2 attacks for 2+3=5 against verdens -4+3=-1. Scoring 6 shifts -3a for a total of 3 stress.)
Numbers start to take their toll as the refugees relentlessly rain blow after blow on verden, slowly wearing him down. He continues to move one step ahead, continues to slip just out of reach of their weapons, but the margin for error is slowly narrowing

Round 3
(verden attacks for 1+3=4 +2 smite for a total of 6 aginst defence 0+2=2. Causing 3 stress, and finishing group 1)
One of the Refugees comes within a hairs breadth of connecting a blow as Verden ducks beneath his blade, coming up within the mans reach and thrusting a hand overflowing with silver flames straight into his face before spinning back out of reach once more, biding his time before stepping in past an out-thrust blade and taking hold of the arm that weilds it in another pyrotechnic rush of silver flames.
(This is probably not going to get any more interesting, so let’s allow the Vampire to concede. Verden will escape, but he won’t manage to exorcise all of the refugees.)

The flames pouring from Verdens hands bathe the street in a flickering silver light and he sees movement in the shadows as more men arrive and pile into the fray. With a sinking feeling, Verden realises that this is not a fight he can win tonight – there are simply too many. With a heavy heart he forces his way towards a seemingly open alley, launches a barrage of flaming blows at the men closest to him in order to drive them back and gain some space, and flees into the darkness.
